RUSTY and inferior grade steel roof panels purchased in New Zealand have been installed at the $1.76 billion Gold Coast University Hospital, revealed Gaven MP Alex Douglas in Parliament last week.
Dr Douglas likened the saga to former Premier Beattie's dog 'Rusty' and other failed Government projects, after being tipped of by a building contractor who when working on site saw the hospital roof panels had rusted prior to installation.
"Why is the Government installing rusty roof panels on what should be our premier $1.76 billion dollar hospital building?" he said.
"The Labor government is cutting corners on quality assurance using cheap roofing steel but is happy to redirect funds to the project's public relations unit.
"The Premier has continued Peter Beattie's 'Rusty' legacy, where rust is a common theme - the only difference is under Bligh the rust is worsening.
"So where can Rusty be found now? He is sitting at Roma Street Station where the chairs and structures are in such a rusted state of disrepair they are a safety hazard and heaven forbid a total eyesore for a tourist.
"Rusty can also be found having his teeth checked at Nerang dental clinic, where it has taken over twelve months, patient complaints, staff embarrassment, and public humiliation for the Government to make the decision that the equipment must be replaced.
"Last year Rusty was found swimming in the pipes of the Tugun desalination plant, after it was revealed 45 inferior pipe couplings were used that were unsuitable for salt water's corrosive effect.
"Maybe the real reason for the payroll debacle was due to Rusty hiding in the computer system mainframes.
"The Labor government really needs Rusty now, because with constant incompetence and failure, they really need a distraction of canine proportions!
