Nerang residents have win on new dental equipment

OUTDATED equipment at Nerang Public Dental Unit, which made an elderly woman ill, will be replaced after complaints from patients, staff and Gaven MP Dr Alex Douglas.

Dr Douglas said in response to his question, the Health Minister denied receiving any complaints relating to the old equipment but advised the equipment would be replaced.

"The Health Minister cannot deny the complaints after I raised the issue in Parliament in August when an elderly woman complained to my office of becoming ill after visiting the clinic," said Dr Douglas.

"The resident told me she suffered from diarrhoea and vomiting after swallowing the rinse water from the faulty and out-dated equipment...more

Gold Coast light rail goes cattle class making passengers stand

NEW plans for the Gold Coast light rail have revealed only a few seats per vehicle will be available for passengers for the forty minute trip from Parklands to Broadbeach.

Gaven MP Alex Douglas asked the Transport Minister in Parliament to outline the patronage capacity per vehicle including the total number of seats per vehicle.

"Elderly, disabled and pregnant women, cannot be expected to stand for a forty minute trip in a vehicle stopping and starting and travelling up to 23 kilometres per hour...more

Professional thieves target tradies' tools

CUTTING equipment, grinders and building materials totalling $12000 has been stolen from Nerang Vietnam Veterans making it the second professional raid in months.

Member for Gaven, Dr Alex Douglas MP asked the Police Minister a question in Parliament to ascertain whether there had been a post-GFC surge of widespread theft of building materials on the Gold Coast.

Nerang Vietnam Veterans had 106 timber sleepers stolen and all their electrical wiring vandalised and damaged in August this year.

"In desperate times professional thieves target low security building sites," said Dr Douglas.

"With unemployment and under-employment at record highs building material theft is attractive to professional thieves because tools of trade are easily disposed of...more

Beattie's 'Rusty' legacy tarnishes new GC Hospital

RUSTY and inferior grade steel roof panels purchased in New Zealand have been installed at the $1.76 billion Gold Coast University Hospital, revealed Gaven MP Alex Douglas in Parliament last week.

Dr Douglas likened the saga to former Premier Beattie's dog 'Rusty' and other failed Government projects, after being tipped of by a building contractor who when working on site saw the hospital roof panels had rusted prior to installation.

"Why is the Government installing rusty roof panels on what should be our premier $1.76 billion dollar hospital building?" he said.

"The Labor government is cutting corners on quality assurance using cheap roofing steel but is happy to redirect funds to the project's public relations unit.

"The Premier has continued Peter Beattie's 'Rusty' legacy, where rust is a common theme - the only difference is under Bligh the rust is worsening.

"So where can Rusty be found now? He is sitting at Roma Street Station where the chairs and structures are in such a rusted state of disrepair they are a safety hazard and heaven forbid a total eyesore for a tourist.

"Rusty can also be found having his teeth checked at Nerang dental clinic, where it has taken over twelve months, patient complaints, staff embarrassment, and public humiliation for the Government to make the decision that the equipment must be replaced.

"Last year Rusty was found swimming in the pipes of the Tugun desalination plant, after it was revealed 45 inferior pipe couplings were used that were unsuitable for salt water's corrosive effect.

"Maybe the real reason for the payroll debacle was due to Rusty hiding in the computer system mainframes.

"The Labor government really needs Rusty now, because with constant incompetence and failure, they really need a distraction of canine proportions!
